FAQ
-
Quartz countertops are made from engineered stone, not natural solid quartz. Here's what they contain:
Composition:
About 90-95% ground natural quartz crystals (one of the hardest minerals)
5-10% polymer resins, pigments, and binding agents
The quartz particles are mixed with resins and compressed under intense heat and pressure to create solid slabs.
-
Yes, quartz countertops are very durable! Here are the key advantages:
Extremely hard and scratch-resistant - quartz is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale
Non-porous - doesn't need sealing and resists staining from liquids, oils, and acids
Low maintenance - easy to clean with just soap and water
Resists bacteria and mold due to the non-porous surface
Consistent appearance - won't develop the patina or etching that natural stone can
Potential limitations:
Not heat-proof - the resin can be damaged by hot pots (use trivets)
Can discolor with prolonged UV exposure, so not ideal for outdoor use
Visible seams on larger installations
Less "natural" looking than materials like granite or marble
Overall, quartz is one of the most durable and practical countertop materials available, especially for busy kitchens. It combines the beauty of natural stone with enhanced durability and much easier maintenance.
